The tale of Prada – supplier of Italian aristocracy and international fashion royals

Today renowned for its causal luxury and utilizing minimalist design to achieve a traditional style with modern influence, the Italian fashion house of Prada opened its first store in 1913 in Milan by brothers Mario and Martino Prada. Offering premium quality leather goods, Prada was awarded the title of Official Supplier of the Italian Royal Household in 1919, becoming a symbol of the Italian aristocracy.

Luisa, the daughter of Mario Prada ran the family business for decades until she was joined by her daughter Miuccia Prada (born Maria Bianchi) in the mid 1970s.

By the late 1970s Miucci becomes the head of the Prada company and initiate a partnership with businessman Patrizio Bertelli. From there, the pair went to develop and expand the Prada business to the Italian fashion house it’s renowned for today.

Especially endorsed by confident, intellectual and affluent working women, Cher, Kate Moss, Jessica Alba, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Alexa Chung, Bella and Gigi Hadid and the Kardashian sisters are a few celebrities to offer patronage to the exclusive fashion house of Prada.

Prada Pocono Nylon Bag and Bowler Bag are born

Launched in 1979, the Pocono Nylon Bag was launched. Innovative and unorthodox in choice of fabric – the durable and water-resistant fabric was often used to make military tents, was at first not a commercial success. However when relaunched in 1985 along with a full line of handbags in the Pocono Nylon fabric, it was highly celebrated and was seen carried by the fashion elite.

When the Bowler handbag was released in the summer of 2000 it became an instant ”it-bag” and thus a cult classic. Consistently sold out upon release and stock replenishment, a long waiting list ensued among fashion devotees. Until this day the Prada Bowler is still a highly coveted classic.
