HermèsBirkin 40 Toile & Leather Bag

Q: What typically fits inside the Hermès Birkin 40?
A: With approximate measurements of 40 x 30 x 21 cm, the Birkin 40 is a spacious carryall. It can generally hold daily essentials plus larger items such as a tablet, a slim laptop, documents, a water bottle, a light knit, a pouch and other travel necessities. Please refer to the Measurements on this page for the exact dimensions of this specific bag.

Q: Is the Birkin 40 better suited to everyday use or travel?
A: The Birkin 40 is widely considered one of the roomiest Birkin sizes and is especially popular as a travel, work or weekender-style bag. It can absolutely be used day to day, but its larger proportions make it best for those who prefer a statement carryall rather than a compact handbag.

Q: What does Toile & Leather mean on this bag?
A: This bag combines toile canvas with leather trim and handles. Buyers often like this combination because it offers the iconic Birkin structure with a lighter, more relaxed feel than a full-leather version, while still retaining a refined Hermès look.

Q: Can this Birkin 40 be carried on the shoulder?
A: No, this style is designed to be carried by hand or in the crook of the arm. It does not include a shoulder strap, and the handle drop is approximately 10 cm.

Q: How should I care for a toile and leather Birkin?
A: Toile canvas and leather both benefit from gentle handling. Avoid overfilling the bag, prolonged exposure to moisture, direct heat and strong sunlight. For storage, keep it in its dust bag and lightly stuffed to help maintain its shape. Surface marks should be treated carefully and gently, especially on the canvas panels and leather trim.

Q: What does the Square A stamp mean?
A: The blind stamp Square A indicates a production year of 1997. On Hermès bags, the blind stamp is an important dating detail, but collectors and resellers also assess craftsmanship, materials, hardware and overall construction when evaluating a piece.

Q: What accessories are included with this bag?
A: This bag includes a clochette, padlock, keys and dust bag. Everything included with this item is listed in the product information.

Q: What is the condition of this specific bag?
A: The overall condition is Very Good Condition. The exterior shows slightly worn handles, minor marks and some scuffs on the corners. The inside has some dents on the base, and the hardware remains shiny with scratches from use.

Q: Is a Birkin 40 considered a rare or harder-to-find size?
A: Compared with smaller modern favourites, the Birkin 40 is less commonly seen and is especially appreciated by collectors who want a larger, more practical Birkin. Its proportions appeal to buyers looking for a more functional and travel-friendly interpretation of the classic silhouette.
