Q: Are these Van Cleef & Arpels Sweet Alhambra Butterfly earrings authentic?
A: Yes. Every item at A Retro Tale is rigorously vetted by our in‑house experts and sold with our authenticity commitment. Shop with confidence.

Q: What are they made from? Is the gold solid or plated?
A: This pair is crafted in solid 18‑carat (18k) yellow gold with mother‑of‑pearl butterfly motifs and a signature beaded border. Van Cleef & Arpels fine jewellery uses 18k gold, typically marked “750”. If you’d like us to confirm the exact hallmarks on this pair, just ask and we’ll share close‑ups.

Q: How big are they and how do they look when worn?
A: The butterfly motifs are petite “Sweet” size, measuring approximately 0.8 cm (height) x 1.0 cm (width). They read as refined studs with a subtle shimmer of mother‑of‑pearl—ideal for everyday or layered piercings. If you’d like the gram weight or an on‑ear photo for scale, let us know.

Q: How do they fasten? Are the backs secure?
A: They are for pierced ears with post backs. Many VCA stud earrings are supplied with secure locking (la poussette‑style) backs; back types can vary by production year. Please check our photos for the exact back on this pair or contact us to confirm. Replacement earring backs can usually be sourced via VCA boutiques or a trusted jeweller.

Q: Is mother‑of‑pearl durable for daily wear?
A: Mother‑of‑pearl is an organic material that sits around 2.5–4 on the Mohs scale, so it’s more delicate than hard gems. With mindful wear—avoiding knocks, abrasion and chemicals—many clients enjoy mother‑of‑pearl daily. Expect natural variations in sheen and tone from piece to piece; that individuality is part of its charm.

Q: Can I wear them in the shower, swimming or to sleep?
A: We recommend removing them before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping. Water, soaps, perfumes and chlorinated/salt water can dull mother‑of‑pearl and stress fine posts and backs. Taking them off at bedtime also helps prevent bending the posts and unnecessary friction on the motifs.

Q: What hallmarks should I expect on authentic VCA earrings?
A: Authentic pieces typically show the VCA signature ("Van Cleef & Arpels" or "VCA"), a “750” fineness mark for 18k gold, and a unique serial number. French‑made items may also carry small French assay marks. Placement varies by model (post, back or plaque); our listing images show any stamps present on this pair.

Q: Are they suitable for sensitive ears? Are they nickel‑free?
A: 18k yellow gold is generally well‑tolerated and typically contains little to no nickel, but individual sensitivities vary. If you have known allergies, monitor comfort on first wear and discontinue use if irritation occurs—we’re happy to advise on protective options or alternative backs.

Q: How should I clean and store mother‑of‑pearl and 18k gold?
A: After wear, wipe gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Keep them dry and away from perfume, hairspray, lotions and hand sanitiser. Do not use ultrasonic or chemical dips on mother‑of‑pearl. Store individually in a soft pouch/box, away from humidity and direct sunlight, to protect both the motifs and the polished gold.

Q: What condition should I expect, what is included, and can I return them?
A: These earrings are in Very Good Condition with light signs of careful wear possible unless noted otherwise. This listing includes no accessories unless specifically shown or stated. Returns are accepted in line with our standard policy—please see our Returns page for eligibility, timeframes and conditions, and ensure the item is returned in the same condition received.
