A: The Marais PM is approximately 23 × 24 × 16 cm with adjustable shoulder straps. It comfortably fits daily essentials such as a long wallet, smartphone, keys, sunglasses case, a small water bottle (about 500 ml), cosmetics pouch and an A5 diary. An iPad mini fits; a 11-inch tablet may be too tall to sit fully inside, and laptops do not fit.

Q: Does this model come with a pouch?
A: The Damier Ebene Marais was originally offered with a matching zip pochette attached by a short chain. Inclusion varies on pre-owned pieces; please refer to the product information on this page to see exactly what is included with this item.

Q: Is this the PM size? How does it compare with the larger Marais?
A: Yes, this is the PM (often referred to as “Marais 23”). There is a larger version sometimes called “Marais 36”, which is taller and wider and offers more capacity. If you prefer a roomier bucket, the 36 may suit you better, whereas the 23/PM is ideal for everyday essentials.

Q: What is the interior like on the Damier Ebene Marais?
A: Most Damier Ebene Marais bags feature a brown or red microfibre (Alcantara) lining with two zipped pockets and a small interior chain for attaching the pochette or keys. The structured circular base helps the bag stand upright; some examples also have protective feet at the base.

Q: How durable is Damier Ebene canvas and is it water‑resistant?
A: Damier Ebene is a coated canvas designed to be hard‑wearing and to resist light rain. Wipe splashes promptly with a soft cloth. Avoid alcohol‑based products and harsh cleaners on the canvas, and keep the bag away from prolonged heat or humidity. When storing, lightly stuff and place in a breathable dust bag to help maintain shape.

Q: What does the date code AR1917 mean on this piece?
A: For codes used from 1990–2006, the first and third digits indicate the month and the second and fourth indicate the year. AR1917 decodes to November 1997, made in France. Date codes are not unique serial numbers and do not, by themselves, authenticate a bag. From 2021, Louis Vuitton began phasing in microchips instead of date codes on new items.

A: The classic Marais is a vintage model that is no longer part of Louis Vuitton’s current handbag line-up. It is now found through trusted pre‑owned retailers and collectors.

A: The dual flat leather straps are adjustable for a comfortable shoulder or hand carry. The open‑top design allows easy access, and many users add a lightweight organiser if they prefer more internal structure.
