Q: What is this necklace made of and what hallmarks should I expect?
A: It is crafted in 18k yellow gold. Typical Elsa Peretti hallmarks include Tiffany & Co., Peretti’s signature and either 750 or 18k to denote gold purity; many Peretti gold pieces from certain eras also bear a Spain stamp. Hallmarks may appear on the pendant and/or the chain tag and can vary slightly by production period.

Q: Is the Whale Tail motif still produced by Tiffany & Co.?
A: As of 8 May 2026, this Whale Tail motif is regarded as a vintage Elsa Peretti design and does not appear in Tiffany’s current online assortment. Availability in boutiques can change, but most examples are found on the secondary market.

Q: What chain length does this come with and how will it sit on the neck?
A: Peretti necklaces have been offered in several lengths over the years. Small pendants commonly came on 16–18 inch chains, while some long styles are around 30 inches. Please refer to the product information on this page for the exact length of this piece, and use a necklace size guide (string test) to visualise where it will fall on you.

Q: Can the chain be lengthened, shortened or replaced?
A: Tiffany boutiques can assess whether an authentic necklace can be altered or the chain replaced and will provide a repair estimate. Many jewellers can also add an extender if you prefer a non-branded solution. Turnaround and feasibility depend on the specific chain style and condition.

Q: How should I care for 18k gold Tiffany jewellery?
A: Clean occasionally with mild soap in lukewarm water and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals, and store separately to minimise scratches. Gold can develop fine marks and a gentle patina over time; professional cleaning and inspection are recommended periodically.

Q: What does the Whale Tail symbol represent?
A: Whale tail jewellery is commonly associated with the sea and is often interpreted as a symbol of strength, freedom, good luck and safe passage—making it a meaningful everyday talisman.

Q: What clasp does this necklace use?
A: This piece features a spring ring clasp for a secure, discreet fastening.

Q: What is the condition of this item?
A: It is graded Very Good Condition with a shiny finish and light surface scratches consistent with gentle wear. Please review the photos for a close look at the finish and overall appearance.

Q: How do you authenticate this piece?
A: Every item at A Retro Tale undergoes multi-point authentication by our in-house experts, including inspection of materials, craftsmanship, engravings/hallmarks and overall construction. We stand behind the authenticity of all items we sell and can share additional product information on request.

Q: What will be included with my purchase?
