Q: What is the Universal Genève Polerouter Date 34mm in 18k gold?
A: It’s a circa‑1960 Swiss‑made vintage wristwatch from Universal Genève’s iconic Polerouter line, featuring a solid 18k gold case (approx. 34mm), a gold‑tone dial with date display, and a brown leather strap. The Polerouter is celebrated for its elegant mid‑century design and innovative micro‑rotor automatic movement.

Q: Which movement does it use, and is the date quickset?
A: Polerouter Date models typically house Universal Genève’s micro‑rotor automatic calibres (often from the 215/218/69 series). Most have a non‑quickset date, meaning the date advances by moving the hands past midnight rather than via a separate crown position. We can confirm the exact calibre in this specific watch on request.

Q: How do I set the time and date safely on a vintage Polerouter Date?
A: If the watch has stopped, wind the crown (about 20–40 turns). Pull the crown to the setting position to adjust the time. To change the date on non‑quickset versions, advance the hands past midnight; repeat as needed until the correct date is reached. Avoid changing the date between roughly 8pm and 2am to protect the mechanism. Push the crown back in when finished.

Q: Is it water‑resistant, and can I swim or shower with it?
A: Water resistance on vintage watches cannot be guaranteed. Treat this piece as not waterproof and avoid swimming, showering, or submersion. If moisture resistance is important, have the gaskets inspected and the case pressure‑tested by a qualified watchmaker, and always keep the crown fully pushed in.

Q: What crystal does it have, and can light scratches be polished?
A: Polerouter models from this era typically feature a domed acrylic crystal, which offers a warm vintage look. Minor marks on acrylic can often be improved with a specialised polish (e.g., Polywatch). We can confirm the crystal type on this exact watch upon request.

Q: Will the 34mm size fit my wrist, and is it unisex?
A: 34mm provides a refined, vintage‑proportion presence that suits many small to medium wrists and wears well unisex. This strap fits wrists up to approximately 20cm; if you need a different fit, we can advise on strap options or additional holes (where appropriate).

Q: Can I replace the leather strap, and what lug width should I use?
A: Yes—straps are easily swapped. Many Polerouter Date cases use 19mm lugs, but there can be variation. We’re happy to confirm the exact lug width on this watch and recommend compatible straps in leather, suede or other materials to complement the 18k gold case.

Q: What makes the Polerouter historically significant?
A: Designed by Gérald Genta, the Polerouter was introduced in the 1950s and is associated with Scandinavian Airlines’ pioneering polar routes. Its micro‑rotor automatic movement allowed a slimmer case without sacrificing winding efficiency—an engineering hallmark that collectors admire.

Q: Are hallmarks present on the 18k gold case, and can you verify them?
A: Universal Genève 18k cases are typically hallmarked. We thoroughly inspect the case and case back; on request, we can provide close‑up photos and confirm hallmark locations and any maker’s or assay stamps relevant to this piece.

Q: What is included with this watch, and is it authentic?
A: This listing is delivered with no accessories unless stated otherwise. A Retro Tale specialises in authentic luxury vintage accessories and professionally authenticates every item. We’re happy to share additional photos and verify details (e.g., movement and case markings) upon request.

Q: What accuracy and service interval should I expect?
A: Performance varies with age and service history. A routine service every 5–10 years is generally recommended, or sooner if you notice timekeeping issues, moisture, or diminished power reserve. Keep the watch away from strong magnets and wipe it with a soft cloth after wear to preserve the finish.
