Q: What typically fits inside the Hermès Birkin 35?
A: With approximate measurements of 35 × 26 × 20 cm, the Birkin 35 is a roomy everyday tote. It comfortably carries a large smartphone, long/continental wallet, keys, slim sunglasses in a soft case, a cosmetics pouch, A4 documents or an organiser, and a 13‑inch laptop (slimmer devices fare best without a bulky sleeve). For an exact fit check against your items, just ask and we’ll test this specific piece.

Q: Will it fit a laptop or tablet, and will the flap close over it?
A: A 13‑inch laptop generally fits horizontally; the structured flap may not close neatly over thicker devices or padded cases. Ultrabooks and tablets fit more easily. If device protection is a priority, we suggest a slim sleeve and placing the computer flat at the back of the bag.

Q: How is it carried? Does it come with a shoulder strap or allow crossbody wear?
A: Classic Birkins are designed as top‑handle totes for hand or crook‑of‑arm carry and do not come with (or have fittings for) a shoulder/crossbody strap. While some third‑party adaptors exist, we don’t recommend them as they can stress the handles and hardware. If hands‑free wear is essential, consider a different Hermès model designed for shoulder straps.

Q: Is the Birkin 35 heavy?
A: It feels substantial due to its full leather construction and metal hardware. In Togo calfskin, a Birkin 35 is typically lighter than the same size in Clemence and is often reported at under 2 kg empty. Actual weight varies by leather and year; we’re happy to provide a scale weight for this exact bag on request.

Q: What is Togo leather and why is it popular?
A: Togo is a grained calfskin introduced by Hermès in the late 1990s. It has a pronounced, pebble‑like texture that’s loved for being relatively scratch‑resistant, lightweight for daily carry, and able to hold its shape with gentle, elegant slouch over time. The grain can help disguise minor marks picked up in normal use.

Q: What is Étoupe and how does palladium hardware influence the look?
A: Étoupe is a signature Hermès grey‑taupe neutral that often features contrasting light stitching. With palladium (silver‑tone) hardware, Étoupe reads cooler and slightly steely; with gold hardware it appears warmer. On Togo leather, Étoupe’s depth and the visible grain give a refined, versatile appearance that pairs with most wardrobes.

Q: How secure is the closure and what does the interior include?
A: The Birkin features a flap top with leather straps and a turn‑lock (touret). You can secure it with the padlock and keys via the clochette for travel or storage, though many users wear it unlocked for ease. Inside you’ll find tonal leather lining with one zipped pocket and one slip pocket to organise smaller items—exactly as pictured in our listing.

Q: How should I care for Togo leather and the palladium hardware?
A: Keep leather away from water, oils, heat and prolonged direct sunlight. If it gets lightly wet, blot (don’t rub) with a soft, lint‑free cloth and allow to air‑dry away from heat. Dust with a clean, dry cloth; if you choose to condition, use a high‑quality neutral product very sparingly and test on a discreet area first. Store the bag upright, lightly stuffed, in a breathable dust bag with handles and hardware padded to minimise impressions; expect fine hairline scratches on shiny hardware with normal wear.

Q: What does the stamp “Square M (2009)” mean and where is it located?
A: Hermès uses a discreet “blind stamp” system to indicate year of production. From 1997 to 2014 the year letter appeared inside a square; “M” in a square corresponds to 2009. On Birkins, the stamp is typically found on the interior leather (often near a handle base or inside panel) alongside artisan/workshop marks.

Q: What accessories are included with this piece and how do you authenticate?
A: For this specific bag we include: dust bag, clochette, padlock, keys and brand booklet—exactly as listed under “Accessories.” If an item isn’t mentioned there, it isn’t included. Every item at A Retro Tale undergoes rigorous multi‑point authentication by our in‑house experts, reviewing leather and lining, stitching, hardware and engravings, heat‑stamps/blind stamps, construction and overall craftsmanship—we stand behind the authenticity of every piece we sell.
