Caring for Patent Leather: Maintain Shine and Protect Against Damage

Patent leather is leather with a thick, glossy coating on top made of plastic. Usually, the patent leather follows the same steps as the coated canvas. The shine that makes these bags the cool pieces that they are can dull over time. A bit of water and soap does the trick to revert this problem. The dullness is usually from dirt and debris building up, so some simple mild soap usually gives you the shine back! The plastic coating does make the bag water resistant, but not waterproof, so always remember to wipe any excess liquid off. Just like the coated canvas, the plastic coating does not do well with strong chemicals, so avoid bleach, acetone and vinegar to keep your bag happy for a long time! Patent leather is easy to care for, but it is also susceptible to scratches. If scratches do appear, the best way to go is with a patent leather cleaner. Using other cleaning agents can also deflect with the patent coating and might linger and turn sticky, which will be harder to reverse.
