Q: What typically fits inside this Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Mombasa Bag?
A: With approximate measurements of 35 x 25 x 5 cm, this bag is best suited to daily essentials such as a phone, card holder or wallet, keys, sunglasses, and a few small personal items. Its slim depth gives it a sleek silhouette, so it is not ideal for bulkier items. Please refer to the Measurements on this page for the most accurate size guide.

Q: Can this bag be worn comfortably on the shoulder?
A: Yes, this style is designed as a shoulder bag. The strap measurement is approximately 32 cm, which offers a comfortable shoulder drop for most wearers. As with many vintage shoulder bags, the fit may vary slightly depending on clothing and personal preference.

Q: What makes the Mombasa bag so distinctive?
A: The Mombasa is known for its sculptural hobo-inspired shape and its striking handle detail, which made the design especially recognisable. It is one of Saint Laurent’s most memorable vintage bag styles and is appreciated for its strong early-2000s designer character.

Q: Is this a good everyday bag or more of a collector’s piece?
A: It can work as both. Its size and shoulder-carry design make it practical for everyday essentials, while the Mombasa line is also highly sought after by collectors thanks to its iconic design and vintage appeal.

Q: What is the condition of this bag?
A: This item is rated Very Good Condition. The exterior shows minor signs of wear and creasing on the leather, the interior has light traces of use, and the hardware remains shiny with light scratches. As this is a vintage item, gentle signs of wear are normal and part of its character.

Q: What colour is this bag?
A: According to the product information, this bag is brown. This versatile shade pairs well with both neutral wardrobes and richer seasonal tones.

Q: Does this item come with any extras?
A: No, this item is listed with no accessories. Everything included with the purchase is reflected in the product information, so if an extra item is not listed there, it is not included.

Q: Where was this bag made?
A: The country of origin listed for this item is France.

Q: How should I care for a vintage leather Mombasa bag?
A: We recommend storing it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity, and avoiding overfilling to help preserve its shape. Clean the leather gently with a soft, dry cloth and use specialist leather care only when appropriate. Because vintage leathers can be delicate, it is best to avoid harsh cleaners or excessive moisture.

Q: How do you verify authenticity on a pre-owned Saint Laurent bag?
A: At A Retro Tale, pre-owned designer pieces are carefully inspected for details such as materials, craftsmanship, hardware, stamps, and overall construction. We stand behind the authenticity of the items we sell, so you can shop with confidence.
