Q: Are these for pierced ears?
A: Yes, these are clip-on earrings, so they can be worn comfortably without pierced ears. If you have pierced ears you can still wear them as clip‑ons—no post is required.

Q: How large are they and how do they sit on the ear?
A: Each earring measures approximately 3.5 × 3 × 1.2 cm (H × W × D). They are a statement size that covers part of the earlobe, with a sculpted horse head (Cheval) motif that sits slightly proud due to the clip mechanism.

Q: Are clip‑on earrings comfortable for all‑day wear?
A: Comfort varies by ear shape and clip tension. Many wearers add clear silicone/cushion pads and take short breaks during long wear. Properly adjusted hinge clips should feel secure without pinching; if they feel tight, consider gentle tension adjustment or ask a professional jeweller to fine‑tune them.

Q: Can I adjust the clip tension myself?
A: Light adjustments are possible on many hinge‑style clips by carefully easing the clip’s spring/loop to reduce pressure. Only make very small changes—too much can reduce security. If you’re unsure, a jeweller can adjust them and fit comfort pads for you.

Q: What are they made of—are they solid gold?
A: These are vintage Hermès costume jewellery finished in gold‑plated metal, not solid gold. Gold‑plated pieces offer the look of gold with a durable plated finish over a base metal.

Q: How should I care for gold‑plated Hermès earrings?
A: Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth after wear; avoid contact with perfume, cosmetics, lotions, and chlorinated or salt water; remove before exercise or bathing; and store each earring separately in a pouch to prevent scratches. Avoid abrasive polishing, which can thin the plating.

Q: Can they be re‑plated or polished if the finish shows wear?
A: Minor surface dullness can often be revived by gentle wiping. If plating wear appears, many jewellers offer professional re‑plating; note that refinishing may alter the piece’s vintage character and could affect collectability. We recommend discussing options with a trusted jeweller.

Q: Are they nickel‑free and suitable for sensitive skin?
A: As a vintage, gold‑plated piece, the exact alloy composition isn’t specified. If you have sensitivities, consider using barrier cushions/pads on the clips and limit prolonged wear. Discontinue use if irritation occurs and consult a jeweller for hypoallergenic pad options.

Q: How are these earrings authenticated?
A: Every item at A Retro Tale is examined by our in‑house experts using multi‑point checks of materials, finish, construction, and brand markings. Vintage Hermès earrings typically feature clear, well‑finished signatures; however, hallmark styles can vary by era. We back the authenticity of all items we sell and are happy to provide additional photos or details on request.

Q: What does “Cheval” refer to, and where were they made?
A: “Cheval” is French for “horse,” a nod to Hermès’ equestrian heritage. This pair was made in France, aligning with the house’s long tradition of French craftsmanship.

Q: What accessories are included?
A: This listing is for the earrings only; no accessories are included. Everything provided is always stated under Accessories on this page.
